Hello inspired readers!
VietCan Books’ mission is to help Vietnamese-English bilingual families with your language-learning journey through quality books and other resources. One of our goals is to connect readers to Vietnamese authors and illustrators.
VietCan Books is honored to introduce Thao Lam, a critically acclaimed Vietnamese-Canadian author and illustrator of The Paper Boat, featured in this giveaway. I read it every night with 2y4m old Zoephi, so the author/illustrator's paper cut collage signature artwork is admired in detail differently every night. This being a wordless children's book, I describe the frames as Zoephi asks her questions, without feeling the guilt of straying away from pre-written text. Thao Lam uses ants to depict the perilous journey of Vietnamese people to escape post-war Vietnam, which is both creative and moving. As my dad is a Boat Person, I'll be using this book to help Zoephi appreciate and honor the sacrifice of her granddad, and many other Vietnamese Boat People, to afford us the freedom we experience today. I appreciate the author drawing a parallel between ants and Boat People being able to persevere and start anew all over the globe, and contributing to society in a positive way.
